Lizard-Steeds (sometimes spelled Lizard Steeds) are Useful Lizards shaped by the Hist to look like large animals commonly used as mounts by the people of Tamriel. The Hist shaped them as such to allow the Argonian people to travel long distances in the swamps. Horses, wolves, and other creatures traditionally used as mounts are not suited for long travel through the deep swamp; these mounts can get stuck in the mud, catch sloughskin from fleshflies, or eat poisonous flora and die. Lizard-Steeds do not have such issues.[1]
The origin of the Lizard-Steeds is similar to the Argonians' own origins. The Argonian Parable of Becoming states that the Hist found the humanoid forms of Men and Mer useful, molding the form of the swamp's lizards after them to create Argonians.[2]
The stablemasters in the Marsh offer a variety of lizard mounts that are well-suited to the swampy conditions. These mounts are both convenient and personable. Some stablemasters trained their lizard-steeds to glide over mud like water over stone.[3][4] Wolf-Lizards are among them. Instead of howling, Wolf-Lizard pups are known to emit a hissing sound.[4][5] Some of the lizard wolves are venomous, making them an even more impressive and intimidating option for riders looking to make an impression. Their venom glows in the dark.[6]
Just like wolves, grown-up Lizard-Senches are employed as mounts, and their offspring are known to hiss instead of meowing.[7][8][9] Chilling Senche-Lizard are a quite rare variant of Senche-Lizard, it originates from very deep swamp, from a tribe said to be dedicated to frost spells as a means of living longer by living slower. Allegedly their Hist tree was known to drip with icicles.[10]
Although guars are already a reptilian species Guar-Lizard Steeds do exist. Their existence was deemed redundant.[11][12] They are excellent for traversing in swampland.[3]
The origins of Camel-Lizards are unclear, but it is speculated that they was created to aid adventurous Argonians in traversing arid lands such as Anequina, or to serve as a mount for daring Khajiiti adventurers exploring the swamps of Black Marsh.[13]
Bear-Lizards are also used as mounts, though they can be also found in the wilderness. They are known for their intimidating, and even fearsome nature. However, their offspring do not exhibit these characteristics during their adolescence.[14][15][16]
Horse-Lizards are commonly used for long-distance travel, with the Bright-Throat Tribe known to breed their own variants of these beasts. Additionally, there are also smaller Pony-Lizard breeds available, and popular among Argonian children.[17][18][19] Another breed of Horse-Lizards, Scorching Horse-Lizards are known for their ability to emit fire.[20]

Notes[edit]
- There are several reptilian forms of Welwa, however these are not Lizard-Steeds. Instead of lizards transformed into the forms of other creatures, they are Welwa who were transformed via Argonian rituals or exposure to special Hist sap.[21][22]
