House Merchad is a Breton noble family dating back to the times of Druids of Galen and the first appearance of the Half-Elf race in High Rock. This ancient bloodline descended from the last Druid King Kasorayn. House Merchad's heraldry was believed to be linked to their Druid roots and is rendered as three cups spilling seeds and leaves.[1][2][3]

History[edit]

Heraldry of the House was already in use during the early years of the First Era. Carvings with house insignia were found in some of the Systres' oldest Druidic circles, along with a stylized rendition of the Ivy Throne and the Druid King's regalia—the crown, staff, and gauntlet—below it.[2][3]

Little is known about the history of the house between the exodus of the Druids in 1E 330,[4] and 2E 521.[1]

Lady Larina Merchad was born in 2E 521 and married a noble of Imperial descent, Lord Lucan Volorus in 2E 538. A few years later, in 2E 540 their son Bacaro Volorus was born. One year later, Lady Larina commissioned genealogists to study her family line. Extensive research revealed Merchad's connection to the Druid King Kasorayn.[1][5] Both Larina and Bacaro were his direct descendants.[2]

Bacaro Volorus founded the Society of the Steadfast to give relief to those caught up in the suffering caused by the Three Banners War. He was also the leader of the Ascendant Order. Bacaro attempted to reclaim the Ivy Throne for his bloodline. In 2E 582 he stole Druid King's Regalia and has taken Frii to Y'ffre Path ruins to perform the ritual that would grant him the powers of the Druid King and begin the Green Scourge.[5] Bacaro's reign was swiftly put to an end by the Vestige, and thus the Green Scourge was prevented.[6]

Mizou Merchad was an outlaw active in Gonfalon Bay as of 2E 582.[7] Estelle Merchad was one of the civilians escaping from the Dreadsails during the siege of Vastyr.[8] It is unknown if they were related to the noble house.

Although the fate of House Merchad is unknown, the surname survived into the Fourth Era. As of 4E 201, Dalan Merchad was a sailor aboard the ship The North Wind.[9]
