Runs-in-Circles

Runs-in-Circles is an Argonian thief living in the settlement of Highcross. Her manic derangement is, as her name suggests, running in circles around Highcross.

After waking up at 8am, she immediately sets off for a day of running. After leaving the house, she will spend the next 13 hours rushing around the village in a dizzying set of random loops. Every so often she will break off to speak to you or to Highcross's other two residents: Mirili Ulven and Bruscus Dannus. At 8pm she finally takes a break and returns to her house for a two-hour dinner. After another two hours of sprinting around her house, she retires to bed at midnight.

Her clothing consists of the standard Mania grey trousers and grey tunic. She carries her key and some gold, and knows the standard leveled Healer spells. She doesn't wear any shoes, and so she may beg you for some to make her constant running less painful.

Dialogue[edit]

When you first meet her, she will plead:

"Ah, a stranger in town. But as I always say, a stranger is just a friend I haven't met yet! Hey, friend, do you think you could help me out? I'm caught a bit short at the moment... anything at all would be much appreciated."
Get lost.
"What? What did you say? What did you say?!"
Sorry, I can't help you right now.
"Oh no. Oh no no no. No no no no no no no!!"
Have a coin, beggar.
"Thanks! Thanks a lot!"

After this she will start to ask you for different items:

"My feet hurt so bad. I could sure use a new pair of shoes. Can you help me out? Please?"
[Give shoes]
"Hmm... not bad! Better than my old pair. Thanks, friend!"

You can then offer her any lower-class or Shivering Isles-added shoes, but she will only actually take original Oblivion ones. Giving her shoes will add them to her inventory, however, she never actually wears them. Other times, she will be after food, and will immediately eat whatever fruit you provide:

"Hey, got any apples? Or carrots? Anything at all crunchy and yummy to eat?"
[Give pear]
"Ah! My favorite! You're a good friend, you know that?"
[Give carrot]
"Nice and crunchy! Thanks!"
[Give apple]
"Sweet and juicy! I can always count on you, my best pal!"
[Give poison apple]
"Sweet and juicy! You're the best!"

She will also ask for the odd coin at times:

"Do you think you can spare a little something for an old friend? You know I'm good for it."

Other times she will simply say:

"What do you need, friend? Anything for you." (Disposition is above 30)
"What? I'm in kind of a hurry."

She will then run away, repeating her trademark cry of

"Ni-ni-ni-ni-ni-ni-ni-ni-ni-ni!"

Additionally, when asked about Mirili Ulven's research, she will complain:

"She doesn't like it when I run through her plants. All she seems to care about is collecting plants and animals."

After you have completed the Main Quest she may also greet you with:

"I'd like my mind back, if you please. Or not. It's really up to you, Lord Sheogorath."

During Taxonomy of Obsession you can also ask her about Mirili:

Mirili's Research
"She doesn't like it when I run through her plants. All she seems to care about is collecting plants and animals."

Conversations[edit]

When she stops her running to talk to Mirili and Bruscus, as long as you have not spoken to Mirili yet about her research, she may engage in conversations with them:

Bruscus Dannus: "I tried to tidy up for Mirili, but she just shooed me away. Then she had the nerve to ask for my help fetching things for her research."
Runs-In-Circles: "Really? She wanted help? I could use some help. Actually I could use some food. Do you have any? I'm not picky. Anything at all."
Bruscus Dannus: "No. You'd just spill on yourself anyway. Well, I have to go sweep my house. It's been over an hour. Goodbye."
Runs-In-Circles: "Do you have any shoes? No? Mirili offered me some shoes if I ran an errand for her research. I just ran instead. Say, do you have any shoes?"
Bruscus Dannus: "No, no shoes. But how about a bath? You really should take a bath. You shouldn't run any errands for Mirili until you take a bath."
Runs-In-Circles: "Ow! These holes in my shoes are killing me. Well, gotta run!"
Runs-In-Circles: "Can you spare some coins? I need a drink."
Mirili Ulven: "Money for wine? I think not. However, I will pay you to collect Hunger tongues. What do you think?"
Runs-In-Circles: "Work! Never. You're supposed to feel sorry for me and just give it to me. Oh! My legs are itching again. Time to run!"
Mirili Ulven: "I need help collecting Swamp Tentacles. I'll even pay you."
Runs-In-Circles: "But then who will run around the town? I need to keep retracing the circle or it will break."
Mirili Ulven: "Never mind. I'll find someone else to help me with my research."

Stage-Dependent Dialogue[edit]

At different stages in the Main Quest, Runs-in-Circles will share different rumors with you and other NPCs:

  • Have you met the newcomer, yet? Rich, maybe? Kindhearted, or just another skinflint?
  • Hey, did you hear the Gatekeeper is dead? That's valuable information, don't you think? Worth a few coins?
  • This Resonator thing-a-ma-jig. I don't get it. What's it for, anyway?
  • Here's one you haven't heard, I bet. The Duke's got his Chalice back. Hmm? See what I mean? Now, what can you do for me?
  • This'd be a good time to have a friend with an ear to the ground, what with all the crazy goings-ons in Crucible, you know what I mean?
  • The Great Torch is burning again! This calls for a celebration! You can spot me, right? Just a few gold?
  • I know we're not part of Dementia, but I think their new Duke still deserves a toast, don't you? You're buying, right?
  • Not every day we get a new Duke! Let's celebrate, you and me! Whaddya say you buy the first round?
  • The Fringe was destroyed! Did you hear? Gone. Everything turned to dust! You don't think that could happen here, do you?
  • What do you say we drink a toast to the new Gatekeeper together? Hey, could you spot me, just this once?
  • They SAY the armies have been restored. But you think that's the whole story? Not by half, just you wait and see.
  • Sheogorath gone. The Duke gone. This whole thing is making me really, really nervous. I need to calm down.
  • Victory calls for celebration, don't you think? I wish I had the coin to drink a toast to Sheogorath.

Unused Dialogue[edit]

  • Runs-in-Circles has a number of "hello" and "goodbye" lines which you will never hear as they are overridden by her AI:
"Are you just going to stand there?"
"Have you seen my sanity? It went by here just a moment ago."
"Gotta run."
"Even Sheogorath won't help me."

Notes[edit]

  • It is possible that she will choose to exit her house in the morning from the upstairs door, which only provides access to a balcony overlooking the Emean Sea. This will cause her to be stuck there unless you push her down to the ground, at which point she will set off on her manic running routine.

Bugs[edit]

  • It is possible that after killing Runs-in-Circles she will continue to cry "Ni-ni-ni-ni-ni-ni-ni-ni-ni-ni!"
