Erlus Risula, an elderly food vendor, is the proprietor of Snowstone Rest. He is feeling very lonely since his beloved dog Old Barnius died a few years back and will enlist your help to gather a suitable offering for his shrine. During the quest Missing Dog, you have the option of bringing Scruffy to Erlus, who will be overjoyed to have a new canine companion and will happily reward you.

Erlus spends his days tending to his inn, occasionally baking and cooking, and sleeps between 2am and 7am in his bed near the pantry. He wears Colovian common clothes, a pair of boots and a silver garnet ring. He will also carry a random assortment of gold, lockpicks, food, drink, and jewelry.

Dialogue[edit]

He will kindly greet you:

"Ah, your presence warms my lonely bones."
"Food, drink, beds. Which one suits your fancy today?"
"We have a warm hearth and warmer mead. I hear that's what the Nords like. Not that I get to try that theory out much."
This place seems quiet.
"Because the Empire's got the border locked up tighter than a Khajiit's skooma hoard. Normally this inn would be a hive of activity as travelers streamed down the Jeralls, heading to Cyrodiil. Now, it's just an inn in the middle of nowhere. And I'm alone. Even moreso since I lost Old Barnius."
Why set up here?
"Why run an inn in the rear-end of the Jerall Mountains? I... suppose that's as valid a question as any. I built this place, board by board, y'know. Well, I should give Old Barnius some credit. He was the moral support I needed when the going was tough. Back in the day, this place used to be an absolute hive of activity. Incredibly busy, and incredibly lucrative. Lots of patrons and even more coin. Y'know, travelers going between Cyrodiil and Skyrim and all that."
You seem very lonely. Are you all right?
"I am, especially since I lost Old Barnius. Fine companion, he was. A fine companion. Actually, I hate to impose, traveler, but - if you ever come upon a stray in the wilderness, would you mind thinking of me? I don't have much coin to go buying a dog, but I really could use the company."

Barnius tribute[edit]

When asking about his old companion, his eyes will glisten:

Who was Old Barnius?
"My old dog. I love dogs. Most faithful companions a man can have. He died a few years ago. The cold got to him. He never liked the cold. Was used to the temperate climes down south. He was my truest friend, and now he's gone."

Depending on whether or not you have already brought him Scruffy, he will then say:

"But now I have Scruffy, and that hole in my heart is - at least partially - filled."
"The customers at least used to distract me, but now I don't even have them."

Either way, he will continue:

"Speaking of which - I've been meaning to leave an offering at his grave, just behind the inn. Something to pay my respects, remember a life long-lost, you know. Problem is, I'm not really up to going around and gathering the stuff together. The wilderness is dangerous and I don't want to die to a timber wolf, or an ogre, or who knows what else..."
Good luck with that.
"Mhm. Yes, indeed. I certainly hope so, traveler."
I'll do it - if you pay me.
"I... suppose. With what little gold I can spare. Okay, then."
I'll help you.
"Thank you, traveler! You're truly a generous soul. I'll reward you with what little coin I can spare, just to say thanks."

If you initially refused to help, you can speak to him again:

I've reconsidered. I'll help with the grave offering.
"Thank you, traveler! You're truly a generous soul. I'll reward you with what little coin I can spare, just to say thanks."

Either way, if you accept he will continue:

"If you could gather some motherwort for me, I'd be able to lay an offering for Old Barnius. Just a few should do. Return the motherwort to me and I'll be able to leave my offering and feel a little more at peace for a few more years."

This will start Barnius tribute. Once you've collected the four portions, you can report back:

I've got the motherwort for Old Barnius's grave.
"Excellent. Thank you, traveler. This will do an old soul some good. Come. You've helped me with this. The least you deserve is to be there when I lay them upon Old Barnius's grave. Follow me."

With this he will lead out to the back of the inn, where he will kneel and lay the flowers next to Barnius's headstone while saying:

"Old Barnius. Old friend. Rest in peace. I still don't know whether dogs feel Arkay's embrace. I may never know. I'm not a pious man. But Old Barnius, just... just know that I still remember you. Know that I still care. Watch over me from wherever you are, old friend. I still love you."

After he's done, he will approach you:

"Thank you so much, traveler. You've truly calmed an old man's soul."
My pleasure. I'm glad to help.
"My thanks again, traveler."
My payment?
"Oh, of course! Your payment. Here. What little coin I can spare. Money is nothing, though. Not after such a heart-warming moment."
You're a foolish old man. Leaving offerings for a dead dog...
"That's very cruel of you to say. I may not be the strongest - physically or emotionally - but that doesn't mean you should berate me that way. Here. Take your payment. And please leave."

Provided you weren't rude to him, he will now greet you with:

"Ah, the kind traveler who helped me pay my respects to Old Barnius. You're a rare jewel in the midst of an endless blizzard. It's great to see you."

Missing Dog[edit]

Once you find Scruffy in the wilderness during Missing Dog, you can decide to bring him over to Erlus rather than to original owner Banus Jucani:

"My, my, a dog. He reminds me of Old Barnius..."
Would you like to take the dog?
"I... well, stranger, if you'd be so kind, I'd... it would warm an old man's heart."
Give me some time to think.
"Of course! I don't want to impose or anything..."
Here, have Scruffy.
"Scruffy's his name, eh? Who's a good boy? Who's a good boy? You are, you are, that's right! Ah, I like him already. I see I've found myself another true canine companion. Thank you, stranger. Thank you! It's not much, but have what little earnings I have. Gold pales in comparison to companionship."

When discussing the inn he will now say:

This place seems quiet.
"It is - business still isn't better. Probably won't be until things settle down in Tamriel. IF things settle down in Tamriel. But having Scruffy here makes things a damn sight less lonely than before. Thank you for that, stranger."
