Serulius the Stagnant is an old Imperial soldier who is now a drunken beggar in Bruma. During the related quest, he will ask you to reunite him his wartime journal and will offer two skill boosts and an enchanted ring in return.
Serulius sleeps from midnight to 8am on his haystack near the northern gate and at 10am will start to wander around the city, begging the denizens of Bruma for a few septims. From 3pm to 5pm he can be found warming his hands in one of the braziers near his haystack, before returning to his wanderings. At 10pm he will call it a day and stumble back home, where he will loiter until his bedtime.
Serulius's desperate status is reflected in his attire: ragged robes and boots, and some gloves. He is armed with an iron dagger and also carries a random selection of gold, lockpicks, gems, jewelry, food and drink.
Related Quests[edit]
- Return Serulius' journal: Reunite an old war veteran with his precious journal. (radiant)
Dialogue[edit]
During his wanderings he may approach you for coin:
- "Spare a coin for an old veteran?"
- "One coin is all I ask. Is that really so much?"
- "I promise, I won't blow it on mead again. I just need some new shoes, or I'll lose my toes."
You can then ask him a few questions:
- You're a veteran?
- "Aye, that I am. Fought in the Great War against the Dominion. I lost me weapon, lost me sight, and lost me freedom. Can't do much now on account of me' eye. If only I had an extra Septim to help me buy a loaf of bread..."
- What's the word around town?
- "I've heard a thing or two. But it's going to cost you."
- I don't have time for this.
- "Hmph. Your choice."
- This should cover it. (Give 5 gold)
- "Ah, yes, that's what I like! Thank you!"
He will then give you one of four random replies:
- "Heard that Dunmer lady, Alammu, is having some trouble. Something about a missing heirloom."
- "Have you heard that bard, Renod? He's probably one of the worst musicians I've ever heard. And I've heard the wailing of ol' Caraltus Cock-Eyed."
- "Heard about Underpall Fort? They say necromancers are holed up there. Hmph. Probably killing passersby and raising them as undead servi-whatsits."
- "I hear some unique people pass through the Restful Watchman. Spending a night there might be interesting."
After he's shared all he knows, he simply say:
- "Oh, looks like I've already told you everything I've heard..."
Quest-Related Dialogue[edit]
If you press him about his memories as a soldier specifically, he will confide:
- Any memories of your time as a soldier?
- "Lots of them. I was there, you know. At the Battle of the Red Ring. I saw the bloodshed, the chaos. I had a journal, kept a record of all that I went through. But those damned bandits came through and stole all my belongings. Journal included. Serves me right for trusting that slimy Argonian in the tavern. Cowers-in-Corners, or whatever his name is."
- Good luck with that, old man.
- "Sadly, good luck is something that, for me, is in short supply."
- I could get it back for you.
- "You'd do that, for an old beggar? Praise the Divines. I'll reward you as best I am able."
Agreeing to help him will start the related quest. Once you've retrieved his journal, he'll be overjoyed and reward you with a skill boost in One-handed and Block, as well as a random enchanted ring:
- I found your journal. Here you go.
- "Thank you, traveler. I can never thank you enough. I'm a beggar, I can't reward you with riches or wealth, but hopefully, I can give something just as good. Let me teach you a thing or two about sword-fighting, blocking, that sort of thing. And take this. An old... keepsake of mine."
Conversations[edit]
While in Bruma, you may overhear Serulius and fellow beggar Reln-Tei bickering. If Reln-Tei has also been gifted a potion by Elintius Rentilia, he will check with Serulius:
Serulius: "Aye, Reln. How'd you do today?"
Reln-Tei: "Not too bad. Lady Jucani was feeling generous today and gave me a septim. You could probably try her yourself tomorrow...and the Chapel was good, of course. How'd you do?"
Serulius: "Didn't do too bad, but don't try and beg from that old man Ralgar. Got an earful about 'making something of me'self' and little else."
Reln-Tei: "Duly noted. Thanks."
Reln-Tei: "I can't believe you, Serulius. You and I, we're in the same boat here..."
Serulius: "If you want some bread go and talk to Hjotra yourself. It's where I got mine. Though, to be fair, you just don't have the same charm as me..."
Reln-Tei: "Charm? Do you mean stench? The old woman just wanted you and your stink out of her fancy inn."
Serulius: "Whatever you say, Reln. I got a full loaf of bread, and you don't."
Reln-Tei: "Look at this? Does this ale look poisoned, or - or, enchanted to you?"
Serulius: "How in Oblivion would I know, Reln?"
Reln-Tei: "Gah. I should just get rid of it."
Serulius: "Why do you ask that, anyways?"
Reln-Tei: "Some guy in a skirt gave it to me - I think he was one of those Synod fellows. I don't trust them, and neither should you."
Serulius: "I don't, but a drink's a drink. Give it 'ere. I'll take the chance that it turns me into a toad."
If his wanderings take him past snobby Albecius Jucani, you may hear the latter castigating the beggar:
Serulius: "Please, sir. Take pity on an old veteran. Just this once..."
Albecius: "This again? Serulius, you and I both know you will just spend it on mead."
Serulius: "Not so! Me, I'm sober, I swear..."
Albecius: "No, you're not - I can smell it on your breath. Gods, you are wretched."
Serulius: "That so? Well, Albecius, one day our places will be reversed. We'll see just how pretentious you are then..."
Albecius: "Ah, but that day is not today, Serulius. And until that time, I think I'll be keeping my coin."
Bugs[edit]
- Serulius was meant to have a number of conversations with Bentior, but as the beggar never visits The Restful Watchman, you will never hear them. ?
- Bentior "No, Serulius. I can't have you in here."
- Serulius "What?! Why?"
Bentior: "Maybe because the last time you came in here you drank half my stock of ale, threw it up, and then passed out across the bar!" Serulius: "But I-" |
Bentior: "You got into a bar fight yesterday! With an imaginary person! You broke four chairs basically fighting with yourself!" Serulius: "To be fair, I had eaten some suspicious mushrooms that day. And-" |
Bentior: "Just last week you got so drunk you kept hitting on me and calling me sweetheart!" Serulius: "Well, Bentior, not to offend you or anythin', but you do kinda look like a woman." Bentior: "I... I..." Serulius: "Sweetheart, I'm sure we can work this out-" |
Bentior: "You stole my sign!" Serulius: "But-" |
- Bentior: "No! I've had the last of you, beggar. Get out, or I'll have someone escort you out."
