Daggerfall:Letter from Bethesda's President
This letter, written by Bethesda president Christopher Weaver, was included as an insert in certain pre-ordered copies of the Limited Edition of The Elder Scrolls Chapter II: Daggerfall.[1]
29 August 1996
Dear Daggerfall fan:
We know you have been waiting patiently for The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall to release. Many of you have written us letters of encouragement during this arduous process and we have read and appreciated every one of them. A few of you have complained that it has taken so long, but admitted creating something the size of Daggerfall was not an easy task.
Well, here it is...almost. The enclosed materials contain everything except the actual Daggerfall CD. We were hoping to press a special CD for you last week, but the fates conspired against us and we have been forced to hold up its delivery three weeks more. The majority of the problems have to do with testing for third party compatibility. Unfortunately that determination has taken weeks of additional testing.
We are never pleased when we have to push back a launch date. We know that with something the physical size of Daggerfall the chances of finding and fixing every bug is probably not possible. Nevertheless, we are being cautious because we want to put out a product worthy of the Bethesda name and The Elder Scrolls series. I trust you can understand.
But, take heart. The game is looking great! We have completed thousands of hours of play testing and the testers tell us that the game is unlike any they have ever played. Breadth, depth, intrigue, involvement, excitement, in short, everything they want in a role playing game. Very soon you shall have a chance to try it for yourself.
As a token of our appreciation for your understanding and continued patence, we are enclosing an extra bonus free with your Limited Edition of Daggerfall. The Daggerfall Chronicles is our official hint book which covers most all the details of Daggerfall from monsters and character generation to magic spells and everything in between. It also contains a detailed walk through the main story quests. The hint book normally retails for twenty dollars. Please accept it with our compliments. Our only request is that you keep its contents to yourself. You are among the first to receive it and we don't want to spoil the game for others who do not know certain of the game's solutions. You may want to put the Daggerfall Chronicles aside for reference just to get you out of those really difficult situations. Or, you may prefer to read it cover-to-cover to get an appreciation for how well thought out and vast Daggerfall is. Whatever your choice, the book is yours.
Once again, we understand your eager anticipation for Daggerfall. We are doing everything possible to turn that anticipation into many months (years!?) of gaming enjoyment. Please bear with us just a little while longer.
On behalf of everyone at Bethesda, I send you,
Best regards,
Christoper Weaver
President
