Lore talk:Camhain Tharn

The UESPWiki – Your source for The Elder Scrolls since 1995
Hello, I'm new and this is my first use of discussion on the wiki so sorry if I do anything wrong. I wanted to question aspects of this entry on Camhain Tharn. The only source we have directly about him is "A Reach Travel Guide", which was written by the man himself. It establishes 3 things: Camhain is the nephew of Durcorach, he is knowledgeable about the Reach and he's quit fond of his uncle. His surname also makes it clear that he's part of the Tharn family. The page claims Camhain is a Reachman, but I don't think the travel guide actually confirms that. The Tharns are an imperial family (until it gets to Jagar at least, several generations later), so Camhain might well be imperial. He is the nephew of Durcorach, but it should be remembered that Durcorach was married to a Tharn, Veraxia. Therefore, Camhain could be the son of Veraxia's brother and therefore not a biological relative of Durcorach. The travel guide could be read as a Reachman talking about his land and the love he has for his leader, or it could be read as an Imperial who is knowledgeable about the land due to his family ties and is speaking positively about it and Durcorach to ingratiate himself with the new emperor. The writing is ambiguous enough, at least to me, that it could be either. If Camhain is a Reachman (presumably only half, as the Tharns are an imperial family), then he's presumably the son of Durcorach's sister who also married a Tharn. This would just be speculation, but if the writing of the travel guide is taken to mean he is a Reachman, then this is the most logical speculation (unless Veraxia had a brother who married a Reachman unrelated to Durcorach, which I suppose could be the case). There is precedent, as Cilvia Tharn married Leovic, showing that the Tharns and the Longhouse emperors were clearly interested in close family ties. Overall though, I don't think it's confirmed that Camhain is a Reachman or a biological relative of Durcorach. The most likely explanation in my view is that he is the son of Veraxia's brother. In conclusion, I think that the section that says his race should be changed to something like "Reachman (assumed)" or "Unknown".WDen (talk) 00:06, 26 May 2025 (UTC)WDen
Hey! We do know that Durcorach had a partner before marrying Veraxia (as Moricar was already a teenager when Durcorach married Veraxia) and that Moricar also had more than one partner. I do agree that it is possible interpretation, but making assumption that he is son of Veraxia's brother is about as valid as making assumption he's child of any of Durcorach's siblings that further married into any other Tharn to strenghten family ties. A speculation. Looking at Jagar Tharn (who is't really Imperial) (or even the fact that Veraxia and Clivia married into the Reachfolk Longhouse line) shows that people of other (or mixed races) may end up bearing this surname I believe it is no surprise that some Reachman may end up with that surname. However the reason why the name was used is far simpler. The guide says that "To the south you'll find the stone scars that Nords cut into our lands as" He explicitly calls the Reach his homeland. If he was really just a Nibenese Imperial he wouldn't appeal to his own ties to the region. His name also follows obvious Reachfolk naming patterns. It is logical to assume he's probably half-half, but the text only explicitly ties him to the Reachmen. Both in calling a Reachman uncle and by calling the Reach his homeland. I do agree that a proper note could be added though. Tyrvarion (talk) 06:28, 26 May 2025 (UTC)
I re-read that travel-guide several times and still completely missed the line about "our lands". He is certainly a Reachman (his Tharn ancestry presumably makes him half-imperial, but that isn't a guarantee and he clearly considers himself culturally a Reachman, plus which child a parent takes after more in the series seems to vary) and therefore his exact relation to Durcorach is unclear. Thanks for the reply. WDen (talk) 22:46, 26 May 2025 (UTC)WDen
