Quest-Related Events[edit]
After agreeing to help Britt the Bold with her diplomatic assignment, Speaker Hialf will ask you to deal with the Beast that has been terrorizing their settlement, in return for his support. As you travel to the nearby forest to meet Britt, you make come across Katul at his camp.
He will be in distress:
- Merchant Katul: "How did I manage to lose a magic hat? Hats don't just walk away!"
You have the option of talking to him, but it isn't required:
- "Sorry, no trades today. You may not think that a hat is important, but I refuse to conduct business without it. My magicap is lucky.
I can't believe I lost it." - Tell me about your magicap?
- "A sorcerer gave it to me to help light fires. I am not very good at that.
But ever since I got my magicap, people don't try to haggle my prices down. I have fewer run ins with bandits. I always sleep by roaring fires! I need that magicap." - How did you lose it?
- "It was so foolish. I was cooking and took my magicap off so it wouldn't fall into the cook pot.
When I turned around to put it back on, it wasn't there. I searched everywhere!" - How do you know it wasn't stolen?
- "Because nothing else is missing. If some thieves come into my camp while I was cooking, why would they only take a plain hat? I have several other wares that glitter and catch the eye.
It must be here somewhere. I'll find it."
Meeting with Britt, you go along with her plan to capture the beast rather than kill it. After following it into the Glittering Cave, it is revealed to be a three-toed sloth ... wearing the Magicap. After you have retrieved it, and Britt has calm the sloth down, you can meet with Speaker Hialf in Bear Hall to tell him the news.
After this Britt will arrive with the Beast and Merchant Katul in tow:
- Merchant Katul: "My magicap! I thought it was lost forever!"
- <The Beast crawls forward, following Britt.>
- Britt the Bold: "Here you go, proof of your fearsomest beast! Now, I would like word with friend."
- Speaker Hjalf: "A sloth? We were terrorized by a sloth?"
You have the option of talking to Merchant Katul about it:
- "My magicap! You found it! On a … sloth?
It's going to take some time to wash the sloth smell out of it, but that hat is worth it. I can't thank you enough!" - How did a sloth get your hat?
- "I don't even remember seeing a sloth anywhere near my camp. Perhaps I was too focused on the cook pot, or maybe the flames crackled too loudly. I'll try to use drier wood next time.
The important thing is, my hat is no longer missing!"
Once you have spoken to Britt, Katul and the Beast will move over to the cooking fire to warm themselves.
