The Cold Flame of Agnon (or simply the Flame of Agnon) is a cold flame that is used to light the Great Torch of New Sheoth, capital of the Shivering Isles.[1] It is also known as the Flame of Mania or the Flame of Dementia, depending on the color.

The flame originates from its shrine at Cylarne, the original capital of the Isles. Cylarne was destroyed during a previous Greymarch and is now counted among the many Predecessor ruins that dot the realm. When lit, the Flame emanates from a central pillar, glowing both orange and aquamarine to represent the duality of Mania and Dementia. The orange flame is fed from the Altar of Rapture, guarded by the Aureal and located within the surface ruins. The aquamarine flame is fed from the Altar of Despair, guarded by the Mazken in Cylarne's subterranean Underdeep.[1]

The Altars of Rapture and Despair can only be ignited by the ritual self-sacrifice of one of Sheogorath's immortal servants. The Aureal and Mazken, in their efforts to please Lord Sheogorath, are locked in an eternal battle to gain control of both altars for the honor of serving as sacrifice.[1] At Sheogorath's command, his servants leap to sacrifice themselves upon the Altars.[2]

Generally, there is no need to reignite the Great Torch. It shines above New Sheoth as a symbol of hope for the city's mortal inhabitants. It is lit from the Sacellum Arden-Sul, which possesses two braziers. The color of the Torch's flame differs depending on which of the two braziers is lit.[1] This is determined at the whim of Sheogorath. When the Mad God favors the Manic district of Bliss, the flame burns orange. When it burns aquamarine, Sheogorath instead favors Crucible.[3] The residents of either district celebrate accordingly.[4]

The extinguishment of the Great Torch is one of the first signs of an impending Greymarch. Circa 3E 433, Sheogorath ordered the Hero of Kvatch to relight the Flame at Cylarne and reignite the Great Torch, to prevent New Sheoth's citizenry from losing hope and potentially defecting to the Forces of Order.[5] The Hero carried the Flame back to New Sheoth by stepping into the brazier, setting their entire body alight with the cold flame.[1]
